It now appears that there’s a pretty good chance that the “Restore the Constitution” rally/ Muster Outside DC 4-19-2010 event will attract enough people so as to make it too big for Gravelly Point Park alone to hold. Namely, Gravelly Point has only 200 parking spaces, and we can only reserve a maximum of 20 if the permit is approved. In the coming days, I will be submitting an amendment to the original permit application to hold the event at two different parks: Gravelly Point Park and Ft. Hunt National Park, both within the Virginia portion of the George Washington Memorial Parkway National Park. Gravelly is located much closer to DC itself, about a mile south of the National Mall, and about 10 miles north of Ft. Hunt.
The plan is to hold the larger portion of the event at Ft. Hunt National Park, which has about 420 parking spaces, and have small convoys of vehicles go from Ft. Hunt up to Gravelly at regular intervals. This way, participants can “walk up to the line” at Gravelly, which is right on the Potomac opposite DC, and then return to Ft. Hunt. An added benefit of this would be the visibility of the convoys going back and forth. Perhaps the lead and tail vehicles could each fly a flag as the drove up George Washington Memorial Parkway.
The main speaking program would be at Ft. Hunt, as would the larger crowd.
This will require a little more coordination and planning, but showing that we’re able to coordinate and plan is part of the image we’re trying to convey to the target audience anyway.
Anyone wishing to volunteer in leading a convoy, please join the “sister site,” “Muster Outside DC 4-19-2010,” which is linked on the right.
As I refine and submit the actual permit application addendum with the itinerary, I will post that and update everyone as well. More to follow within the week.
One last thing: this Tuesday’s election could have some serious historical significance and definitely will have an impact on our Constitutionally protected liberties and tradition of smaller government. I hope that it goes smoothly and that those in power honor the will of the people. But, if this is not the case, you will see a LOT of anger. Please remember to remind folks that constitutional violation and constitutional ignorance is the root cause of just about all of the problems associated with overgrowing government. AND, remind them that they are invited to “put their money where their mouths are” and attend the 4-19-2010 “Restore the Constitution” rally.
